What is Juneteenth?

“One-hundred-and-fifty[eight] years ago this year, the last of the enslaved black population in Galveston, Texas received word that they were officially free. Despite the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which technically ended slavery on paper, there were still 250,000 enslaved people in Texas alone who had yet to learn of their newfound freed status until June 19, 1865. Thus, Juneteenth was born.”

The Root

Our mission:

The Juneteenth Festival aims to build and strengthen the Black community within Otsego County. However, in doing so event goers from all backgrounds, economic standings, religions, sexual orientation and genders receive education that highlights Black art, food, music and creatives. The festival serves as a bridge to connect community members to informational resources for services locally, providing free food for all in attendance as well as a rich experience in interactive art-based activities.

Our Vision:

To strengthen and build a vibrant, accessible and cultural experience that brings the Black community of Otsego County together with the intention of empowering the Black community to find support, value and allyship amongst one another.
